Dr. Mary-Claire King first discovered that a gene on chromosome 17(BRCA1) was linked to inherited cancer, including ovarian and breast cancer. The article was published by Science on December 21, 1990.

Mary-Claire King was born on February 27, 1946. She is an American human geneticist and a professor at the University of Washington where she studies the interaction of genetics and environmental influences on human conditions such as HIV, lupus and deafness, as well as breast and ovarian cancer.

Dr. King continues to push the boundaries of science to this day.
