In Croatia, Nikola Tesla would become a world renowned scientist, inventor and engineer. Tesla's interest in inventing came first from his mother who, in her spare time, would often create appliances in their kitchen. In 1884, Tesla left Croatia and headed to the United States.
 
He worked for a short period of time with Thomas Edison whose work with DC-based electrical systems was spreading across the country. Tesla soon left Edison and went on to patent Alternating-Current (AC) machinery. The patent was later purchased by Westinghouse whose influence later propelled the technology to power cities.
 
Telsa also went on to invent the Tesla Coil, and spearhead discoveries in x-ray and radar technology. Tesla died in 1943 in New York.
