Carl Linnaeus was a botanist and zoologist among other things. Due to his breadth of work, he has been commonly referred to as the Father of Modern Taxonomy.

Linnaeus was born in Sweden, but later traveled across Europe. In 1735, while in the Netherlands, he published Systema Naturae, a new system for the classification of plants. Through the 1740s, 50s and 60s, Linnaeus returned to Sweden and continued to collect, identify and classify not only plants, but animals and minerals. He went on to publish a number of further volumes on his work. Carl Linnaeus was considered one of the most noted scientists of his time and his work has resounding effects today.
