Dr. Gail R. Martin published a paper in which she first isolated stem cells and coined the term "embryonic stem cells." 

 
Martin has led an illustrious career in the fields of developmental biology and genetic targeting technology. While her contributions to science are many, she is best known for having coined the term "embryonic stem cells" in December of 1981 through her work in which she also first isolated stem cells.
 
Continuing to push the boundaries of science, Dr. Martin's most recent tenure was at the University of California in San Francisco where she served as the director of the Graduate Program in Developmental Biology until in 2009.
